Media Censorship The Vietnam War was the first living room war. With almost every American citizen having a television set, families saw soldiers in the battlefield almost every night. Until 1968, the media made it seem that the American people were winning the war. However, the people on the battlefield had a different take on the war. When news teams started to cover the war on the actual war front, the raw footage was shown on the news in the living room of every American household. The footage shown gave the viewers a raw look on the war, showing the violence that ensued, such as U.S. Marines cutting off the right ear of every dead Vietcong soldier for a record.
